Public Opinion in Central Europe on European Integration: the Cases of the Czech Republic and Poland. An Account of A Quantitative and A Qualitative Research
Dr Marek Kucia E-mail: uskucia@cyf-kr.edu.pl -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (This article is an extended version of a presentation made at the 'Central European Identity' Conference in Warsaw/M¹dralin on 11 May 1997) This article gives an account of some of the results of the Central and Eastern Eurobarometer (CEEB), a major quantitative research that was conducted on behalf of the European Commission in the countries of Central and Eastern Europe in autumn 1996. It also discusses the main results of a qualitative research project which the author of this publication carried out in Poland and the Czech Republic in spring 1997. The key objective of this article is to address the issue of Central European identity in the context of opinions and attitudes on European integration in two of the countries of the region. This text has also a methodological goal. It aims at a complementary analysis and interpretation of quantitative and qualitative data in order to overcome certain limitations of the former and demonstrate the advantages of the latter.
